Mock Exam 2 — The Timing Exam

Most candidates who fail the CPC exam do not fail because they did not know the answers. They fail because they ran out of time. Mock Exam 2 exists to fix that specific problem. Take Mock Exam 1 first to establish what you know; take this one to find out whether you can deliver that knowledge inside four hours.

The Maths You Need to Internalise

Four hours for 100 questions is 2 minutes 24 seconds per question. That sounds generous until you meet a multi-procedure operative note that needs three codes and two modifiers. In practice, questions fall into three groups:

• Fast questions (30–60 seconds). Terminology, anatomy, straightforward guideline recall. Roughly a third of the paper.
• Medium questions (2–3 minutes). Single-procedure coding, ICD-10-CM lookups with one or two steps.
• Slow questions (5+ minutes). Long operative reports, multi-code scenarios, E&M levelling from a full note.

If you spend five minutes each on twelve slow questions early in the paper, you have burned an hour and answered twelve percent of the exam. That is how good coders fail.

The Three-Pass Method

Work the paper in three passes rather than straight through:

1. Pass one — harvest the easy marks. Go from question 1 to 100. Answer anything you can settle in under a minute. Flag everything else and move on immediately. Do not read the long operative notes yet. Target: 60–75 minutes.
2. Pass two — the medium flags. Return to the flagged questions that need a lookup but not a full note breakdown. Target: 90 minutes.
3. Pass three — the monsters and the guesses. Whatever time is left goes to the long scenarios. Answer every remaining question even if you are guessing. There is no negative marking, so a blank answer is a guaranteed zero.

The three-pass method almost always adds marks on the first attempt, because it stops one hard question from eating the time that four easy questions needed.

Elimination Beats Coding on a Timed Paper

Every question gives you four options. Often you do not need to code the scenario from scratch — you need to find the one option that survives scrutiny. Practical shortcuts:

• Compare the answer options first. If three options share a base code and differ only by modifier, the question is really about the modifier.
• If two options differ by approach — open versus laparoscopic, for example — go straight to that word in the operative note.
• Check code order in ICD-10-CM answers. A single sequencing error rules out an option instantly.
• If one option contains a code that does not exist or is clearly out of section, eliminate it without thinking.

What to Record While You Sit This Exam

Keep a sheet next to you and note the clock time at question 25, 50 and 75. After submitting, compare against the checkpoints below.

After the Exam

Split your wrong answers into two piles: knowledge gaps and time casualties. A knowledge gap is a question you would still get wrong with unlimited time. A time casualty is one you rushed or guessed. If most of your losses are time casualties, do not study more content — practise pacing. If most are knowledge gaps, go back to the relevant guideline chapter before taking Mock Exam 3.
